In this thrilling and deranged Poe story, a plague known as the "Red Death" is destroying a fictional country. The prince of the land, Prospero, forces himself to be optimistic, and decides to ignore the threat and protect himself by locking up the palace and hiding safely inside. After a few months pass, people are still dying from the "Red Death". Prince Prospero decides to throw an extravegant masquerade ball. There are seven rooms that the party guests may roam about. The color of the room farthest to the east is blue, with blue stained-glass windows. Moving west, the next five rooms are entirely purple, green, orange, white, and violet. It turns out that all of the guests avoid the last room. The very last room, located the farthest west, is black with red stained-glass windows, and a looming ebony clock. When the clock sounds each hour, the palace becomes silent. There is nothing but silence from all of the guests, as well as the musicians in the orchaestra.
Very abruptly, a new party guest arrives at midnight. Many of the other guests are afraid of him, due to the fact that his mask looks like the face of a corpse and also because the strange man is dressed like a ghoul. He is spotted with red blotches, similar to those covering the victims of the "Red Death". Prince Prospero is angered that this man is causing such a fuss, and he follows the masked man.
He finally approaches him in the black room with the red windows and the ebony clock. As Prospero closes in on the man, he dies. All of the party guests attempt to confront the man, however, they realize there is no human man at all; there is no one. They too become sick with the plague and suffer the same fate as Prospero. The "Red Death" has defeated the entire kingdom, the high and almighty prince being victimized first.
